Achieving Ubiquitous Broadband Networks

22 – 23 February 2010

Diplomat Radisson blu Hotel, Spa and resort (+973 17 525 222)

Manama, Bahrain

A joint ITU, AREGNET and SAMENA event hosted by TRA Bahrain

This practical ITU, AREGNET Regional Broadband Conference, held in Manama, Bahrain is also supported by SAMENA.

Introduction: Ubiquitously available, affordable high speed broadband access (NGA) is widely regarded as the key to unlocking future economic development and enhancing social welfare. Whilst numerous broadband access approaches are being pursued around the world it is as yet inconclusive as to which model will most fully meet the social, economic and commercial objectives underpinning these initiatives.

Timing: The workshop will be held at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Spa and resort, Manama, Bahrain on the 22- 23 February 2010. It will occur after the GSMA Annual event in Barcelona (February 15 – 18 2010) and before the planned CISCO Annual Networkers event being held in Bahrain during March.

Objectives: The objective of the workshop is to support opinion leaders in the Arab region and the wider international community in their thinking and plans with respect to achieving competitive ubiquitously available, affordable high speed Broadband services. Participants will be drawn from Operators, Regulators and equipment suppliers.

This will be achieved by bringing together policy makers to initially address the drivers for Broadband networks covering economic development and social inclusion and then introducing regulators and operators to present current country specific case histories. These will then be followed by a panel session debating the pros and cons of the different solutions that have been presented.

Format: For each country the regulator and incumbent operator will present their different country’s case histories as to how they have, or are planning to achieve, competitive ubiquitous Broadband services. A Panel session with all speakers will then explore and debate the alternatives and the issues raised in the presentations.

Participants: Participation will be open to all members of AREGNET, SAMENA, and ITU – D free of charge. Participants must register before the event with:
